Profile of department
Department provides education on all faculties of Technical University in Zvolen. It deals with classes of special disciplines focused on chemical wood processing and thermal wood treatment in all grades of study, among the basic subjects. In the field of scientific research, the department works on tasks of basic and applied research focused mainly on chemical changes of wood components during individual wood processing technologies and their influence on the environment.
In the research and scientific area the department performs tasks of basic and applied research aimed at monitoring of chemical change of the wood components at individual wood processing technologies and their environmental influences. In addition to these basic tasks the research and scientific activity is oriented towards:
- the area of wood pulp and paper manufacturing (delignification of wood, characterisation of natural and recycled fibres in paper manufacturing, protection of written cultural heritage, problem of analyses and removing extractive substances by wood pulp manufacturing),
- the area of hydrolysis processes of lignocellulosic materials (characterisation of gaseous and liquid products, hydrolysates utilisation or air pollutant removal),
- analyses of individual wood components and selected substances of the environment by means of chromatographic and spectral methods,
- the area of fire properties of materials and analysis of dangerous substances.
History of department
The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies (KCHCHT) was founded in 1952 as Department of Chemistry.
During more than 60 years of existence, the department has undergone several organizational changes. Until 1955, it was organized directly by the Rectorate, since that year it was incorporated in the Faculty of Wood Sciences and Technology of University of Forestry and Wood Technology in Zvolen.
Since 1 January 1992 to 31 March 2000, the Department was the part of the Faculty of Ecology and Environmental Sciences of Technical University in Zvolen. Since 1 April 2000 it has returned to Faculty of Wood Sciences and Technology of Technical University in Zvolen.
